Our Story
To name a restaurant is quite a thing.
Days, weeks (and a few bottles of wine) were spent brainstorming the perfect name. One morning over coffee, JT said, “Let’s simply name this restaurant what it is. We are building 24 on the construction plans, located in Middleton. How about 24 Middleton?”
When we shared the name with JT’s Mum, she lit up and smiled. “Well 24 Middleton would certainly be a special name. It’s a nod to our family’s history.”
A 24 Middleton Love Story
At the brink of World War Two, Charles and Ena Harrrison rented a modest terraced house in the suburb of London, England.
Charles, a Sergeant Major in the Royal Artillery, and Ena had two children, Irene Emily and John Frederick. At the age of 17, Irene took a job as a Civil Servant for Ivy Farm.
Ivy Farm was the site responsible for the first-ever UK interception of fax, intended for the Japanese Military to enable attacks on the US air force. This information was passed to the US allies, enabling them to adapt their tactics. Here, Irene met a young Naval Officer, George Henry Wicking.
After the bombing and sinking of his ship, The SS Thistlegorm, George was very lucky to only lose his favorite gold watch at the bottom of the Red Sea. George was then stationed at Ivy Farm and, due to a billeting (housing) shortage, took up lodging with a local family, Irene’s family. Working and living under the same roof, war time romance blossomed.
George and Irene married and had three daughters: Jennifer, Christina and Isabel. Christina would go on to have three children, her oldest boy being Jonathan George Tubby, “JT” for short.
The address of Irene’s family home and George’s lodgings?
24 Middleton Avenue, Sidcup, England… a truly special name.
